To the town of San Pancho,
These pictures remind us of what we have, but there have been some serious problems the last few weeks. Most importantly, the death of a young man last Saturday. My thoughts go out to his family and friends. My problems are nothing in comparison, but I would like them to be known. I was robbed three times in 10 days. The first theft was only food and beer, which is understandable since our fridge is basically right on the beach. The second theft was serious and occured in our upper house when I had guests on the property during the day. The third happened when I came down to deal with the problem, yet fortunately it only involved our hammocks. The food, beer, jewelery and electronics are gone, but if anyone sees a blue nylon hammock with wooden spreaders, it is definitely ours! I had them custom made and they are the only ones in Nayarit. I’m just hoping that the theif will display these in plain sight, unlike jewelry or computers. I would appreciate anyones help i
n this matter to help stop annoying theft and bring our town back to what it was.

The U.S. Embassy has received information that numerous demonstrations
may occur in Mexico on or around August 5, 2008, to protest the
scheduled execution in Texas of prisoner José Ernesto Medellín, a
Mexican citizen. The Embassy urges all U.S. citizens in Mexico to be
especially mindful of demonstrations taking place in their town or
city, or in areas to which they intend to travel. Travelers should
be aware that various political activists abroad frequently seek to
use public demonstrations to forward a variety of political objectives
and that it is likely that such activists may use the occasion of
anti-execution demonstrations to raise other issues involving the
United States or to incite anti-U.S. sentiment in general. The
Mexican Constitution prohibits political activities by foreigners, and
such actions may result in detention and/or deportation. Travelers
should avoid political demonstrations and other activities that might
be deemed political by the Mexican authorities. We wish to remind
American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can
turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American
citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if
possible, and to exercise caution if in the vicinity of any
demonstrations. The Department of State urges American citizens to
take responsibility for their own personal security while traveling
overseas. For the latest security information, Americans traveling
abroad should regularly monitor the Department’s travel website,
http://www.travel.state.gov, where the current Worldwide Caution,
Travel Warnings and Travel Alerts can be found.

Hola Friends in San Pancho,
The SMILE Project is back !! Yes, a year has already passed …. They will be here with 11 Dental Hygienist & 2 Professors — starting program activities by next week:). Please check the dates below for Town Clinics and School Presentations schedule.
For those who don’t know the program, the SMILE project is a program a collaboration between San Pancho and the Camosun College Dental Program (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada). They provide educational presentations at all the local schools, weekend Dental Clinics at the local Hospital and an intensive 3 DAY TOWN CLINIC for local residents. The service includes assessments, thorough cleaning of teeth and gums, fluoride treatment and consultation — providing state of the art techniques and materials. All services at NO COST, they come as “ambassadors” of health, volunteering their skills as part of the Camosun College International program. Last year was incredibly successful — they served approx 200 children and 150 adults. And, considering that for many clients, it was the first ever dental treatment ever experienced, the program hygienist were thrilled to know that the community was open and willing , despite the laborious work. It was , in the end, obvious that they return each year! ( good news for san pancho!)
Thank you to all who volunteered hours as “interpreters” and those restaurants who donated / offered discounts to our “ambassadors” last year. I hope we can count on you again this year.
